Key takeaways
- Choose a single-zero wheel: European roulette's house edge is 2.70%, American's is 5.26%.
- French roulette's La Partage rule cuts the edge on even-money bets to 1.35%.
- Every bet on the same wheel has the same edge, except the American five-number bet, which is worse.
- No betting system changes the house edge.
The three roulette wheels
2.70%
European
37 pockets: 1 to 36 and a single zero. The standard choice at UK casinos.
1.35%
French (La Partage)
A European wheel where half an even-money stake is returned when zero lands.
5.26%
American
38 pockets, with zero and double zero. Avoid if a single-zero wheel is available.
The maths behind those numbers is simple. A straight-up bet on one number pays 35 to 1. On a European wheel there are 37 pockets, so a fair price would be 36 to 1; the gap is the house edge, 1 in 37, or 2.70%. An American wheel has 38 pockets but pays the same 35 to 1, so the gap is 2 in 38, or 5.26%.
Roulette bets and payouts
| Bet | Covers | Pays | Chance on a European wheel |
|---|---|---|---|
| Straight up | 1 number | 35 to 1 | 2.7% |
| Split | 2 numbers | 17 to 1 | 5.4% |
| Street | 3 numbers | 11 to 1 | 8.1% |
| Corner | 4 numbers | 8 to 1 | 10.8% |
| Six line | 6 numbers | 5 to 1 | 16.2% |
| Dozen or column | 12 numbers | 2 to 1 | 32.4% |
| Red/black, odd/even, 1–18/19–36 | 18 numbers | 1 to 1 | 48.6% |
On a single-zero wheel every one of these bets carries the same 2.70% edge. Bigger payouts simply mean you win less often. That's why there's no "best bet" in European roulette, only bets that suit how you want your session to feel: steady with even-money bets, or long gaps between big wins with single numbers.
Online, live and auto roulette
Digital (RNG) roulette
A random number generator decides each result. Games are quick and table limits are often low. UK-licensed games must be independently tested.
Live dealer roulette
A real croupier spins a real wheel in a studio, streamed to your device. Slower, more social and with the same edge as the matching digital wheel. See our live casino guide.
Auto roulette
A live wheel with an automatic ball launcher and no dealer, so rounds come round faster. Faster rounds mean more bets per hour, and more cost per hour.
Do roulette systems work?
No betting system can change the house edge. Progressions such as the Martingale, which doubles your stake after each loss, can produce lots of small wins, but a run of losses (which will come) quickly hits your budget or the table limit, and the loss wipes out the gains. Each spin is independent: the wheel has no memory, so "due" numbers don't exist. Play roulette for entertainment and set a budget for the session.

Coral's app carries live roulette, and all five casinos offer table games. Welcome offers on this page are for slots, so if roulette is your game, weigh payments and table choice above the bonus. Read the full casino reviews, or see which casinos pay out fastest.
Roulette and UK rules
The online slot stake limits don't apply to roulette, so table limits are set by each casino. All other UK protections do apply: age and identity checks, deposit limits, time-outs, self-exclusion and the ban on credit cards. Our UK rules guide covers the full picture.
How we chose these casinos
Every casino on this page holds a UK Gambling Commission licence, confirmed on the public register. We read each welcome offer against the casino's own terms, and we only state game, payment or withdrawal details that the casino publishes or that independent sources agree on. Our full method is on the how we rate page, and our sourcing rules are in the editorial policy.
Keep it a game
Table games feel slower than slots, but sessions still add up. Decide your budget before you sit down, never increase stakes to win back losses, and use the deposit limits and reality checks every UK casino must offer. The National Gambling Helpline is free, 24/7, on 0808 8020 133. More support is on our responsible gambling page.
